Dog Urine

General Information:
Urine should be cleaned up using the Water Based Stains Cleaning Method.

Tools & chemicals:
Neutral pH low residue spotter, terry towels, water.

Technique:
Using a terry towel, soak or blot as much of the urine as possible. If the stain is fresh most of the urine can be soaked up this way. Be sure you have lots of towels and always use a completly dry area of the towel to blot with.
Now using a neutral pH low residue spotter, apply a small amount, blot and repeat until the stain is removed.
An alternative is to mix 1 tsp. of neutral pH liquid detergent (dish washing or fine fabric detergent that does not contain any bleach ) into 1 cup of warm water. Tamp, do not scrub as this may distort the texture of of the pile. Cover with a white terry towel and press down repeatedly.
If the spot or stain turns brownish when dry, mix 1:2 white vinegar and water. Apply a small amount and blot. Repeat only once.

Yellowing Clothes

I noticed that someone was asking about yellowing here is how I answered a similar question on yahoo answers recently…

Here are some ideas for you:

Yellowing – Always read and follow the care instructins and any warnings on the garment label. And, follow the General Rules for stain removal.

Some fabrics which are white or pastel colored contain optical brighteners or fluorescent whitening agents (FWAs) which were applied during manufacturing. These agents can decompose when exposed to light and atmospheric conditions, or prolonged storage conditions. In some cases the entire fabric becomes dingy or develops a yellow cast. In other cases the yellowing develops only where exposed to light. The FWAs can also be damaged by the use of chlorine bleach.
Unfortunately, once the FWAs are damaged, the whitening agents can’t be reapplied to the fabric.

All fabric bleach or the use of speciality products available in grocery or drug stores, such as Rit’s “Whitener and Brightener” may help. Carefully read and follow the instructions on the product label, and check for colorfastness first.

another tip to look at :
Dinginess, Yellowing, Graying – Always read anbd foolow the care instruction and any warnings on the garment label. And, follow the General Rules for stain removal.
There are several reasons why fabrics gray, yellow, and become dingy, including not using the right amount of detergent (i.e., using too much or too little detergent), insufficient rinsing, and/or the wash water temperature is too low. To reburbish clothing from these discolorations:

Wash with a permanent press cycle in hot water, use a cool-down rinse on permanent press and use one cup of water conditioner instead of detergent.

If the discoloration remains, either repeat this procedure or wash with the correct amount of detergent and either all-fabric bleach or chlorine bleach, if safe for the fabric. (always check for colorfastness first.)

If the fabric is white, consider speciality products available in grocery or drug stores, such as Rit’s “Whitener and Brightener” to whiten the fabric.Always separate and wash your whites separate from colors. And, don’t put heavily soil garments with lightly soiled items.

Blue Dye (Ink) on Linoleum Floor

This question was submitted from Malanuk.

“I have blue dye on my new linoleum floor from a paper bag. What can I use to get it out?”

This is a tough one, we have had success and failure with this problem. Linoleum is, unfortunately, not very resilient (translation…stains easy).

Try these techniques :

I would use a general purpose solvent or even rubbing alcohol, which is usually recommended to remove ink.

If it doesn’t wipe off, you may have to use a medium aggressive scrubbing pad (green).

Either way, using a strong chemical and scrubbing you will have to apply a wax to the floor to protect at least the area you cleaned. Remember always test a small area first before using a chemical or technique you have not used before on the surface you are cleaning.

Colored Chalk on Masonry and Concrete

Tools:

  • Soft cloth
  • Soft Scrub (mild abrasive cleanser)
  • Sponge
  • Stiff bristle brush

Technique:

  • Brush and rinse off as much of the chalk stain from the surface with a sponge.
  • Remove the remaining chalk stain with a damp sponge and Soft Scrub.
  • With a clean damp sponge, remove any remaining Soft Scrub.

Construction Adhesive

Construction adhesive is used to secure wall panels, ceiling panels, or for extra strength in installing almost anything. This stuff sticks to everything!

  • If you get it on your skin try to remove most of it with a paper towel, then remove the residue with turpintine or mineral spirits. Depending on the brand this does not always work.
  • If this fails, the top layer of your skin will eventually fall off, or you can speed the process by scrubbing your hands with a pumice stone.

Contact Cement or Rubber Cement

Contact cement is very common. Usually applied to both surfaces, and allowed to semi cure to a tacky state, the surfaces are then pressed together for a very strong bond. It is commonly used for applying laminate.

  • When on your hands, rub them together, the contact cement will bunch up and fall off.
  • To remove from other surfaces, try rolling it by rubbing with an eraser, or break down the glue using acetone.

Correction Fluid Off Wood

This question was submitted from Tip4tips.

“My son has painted correction fluid over a wooden interior door. How can I remove it without damaging the wood?”

  • A solvent is likely the only sure thing that will remove this. However, the solvent will also remove paint and finish etc. so you will have to use it sparingly (not directly on the door) and pour onto a rag and wipe.
  • If you want to try without a solvent, citrus based cleaners are effective but not as aggressive as general purpose solvents.
  • If possible, get the area wet with a neutral soap and water and try to scrape off using your finger nails or a plastic scraper. Either way you will have a challenge to remove this without affecting the door in some way.

Crayon from Clothes Dryer

WD-40 works well for removing crayon, as does as a product like Goo Gone. You may have some work ahead though since the heat from the dryer will have set the stain. Try using a green scotch brite scrubber pad, found on pot scrubbers in any grocer store. This pad is abrasive enough to remove the crayon without damaging the interior finish of the dryer.

Precautions:For all dryers we would recommend that you wipe down the interior of the dryer with a damp rag to remove any residue, and if you have a gas dryer leave the door open and allow it to air out for at least 24 hours before using. (This will help prevent your dryer from blowing up.)
